Motorcycle How To's

Build your own workbench

This is not specifically a motorcycle how to but this is how I built the workbench for my garage. It did come in handy for working on my bike. I designed it to be 8ft long and about 3 and a half feet wide. Also wanted it to have an overhang so that I could have a bar stool to slide underneath so I could sit and work at the bench for long periods of time. I also incorporated a shelf underneath for additional storage.

I had a pretty good mess on my existing workbench. It was too small and it was very badly built. It came with the garage when I bought the house. I put up with it for quite a while before I decided to rip it out and do it right. I tore out the sheet rock and replaced it with paneling behind the position for the bench. I built the bench out of 4x4's 2x4's and 3\4 inch plywood. I used a dado blade on my radial arm saw to notch the 4x4's. I notch out enough to fit the 2x4's in the notch. I secure the 2x4's to the 4x4 legs with lag bolts about 4 inches long.

I use 2x4's to create the lower shelf. .

I cut the 2x4 ends at 45 degrees and nailed them. I put a 2x4 across the front and notched it to create an egg crate effect for the top of the bench. I used 3/4 inch birch A-B plywood for the top of the bench and I used 1/2 C-D plywood for the lower storage shelf.

Finally once the construction was complete I secured the bench to the studs in the garage wall. I secured it at four points. This bench is rock solid. I installed a 5 inch bench vice to the corner and it give me plenty of room to work and plenty of space left over for storage.

I hope this has been helpful for you.
