I knew I wanted to improve my CBR before I brought it home. I bought it on eBay from an individual in Dallas. The bike was in pretty rough shape. It had been laid down on the right side and he had started making repairs himself. He "bondo-ed" the tank and sanded out a lot of the rough areas. The frame had been cut near the tail light, the passenger pegs were missing, the upper fairing stay was bent, it was missing the mirrors and the windshield, and the upper and lower fairings were damaged. I began buying parts here and there but mostly on eBay. It came with a god awful looking race tail. I replaced it with a stock tail section and seat and tail light. I bought all the pieces that go to the later '97-'98 model because I like the shape of that tail section better than the '91-'96 style. I also had to replace the master cylinder, chain and front tire. In all I may have been better off buying an older bike in better condition but I am having fun fixing it up. The plan is once the body is complete I will recoat the body in bedliner. I had seen one other bike at a track day that was coated in spray on bedliner and I thought it looked pretty cool. I will give it a try and see what happens.
Bring it on Home!
Here is a couple picks of the ride home from Dallas. I usually transport my bikes on my 4x8 utility trailer. I picked it up used for about $250. Not a bad deal and I can haul a lot of other junk besides eBay bikes :)
Before
During
As you can see in these pictures I have installed the new mirrors and the new windscreen. I made the necessary modifications and mounted the seat and the rear fender. I fixed the cracked tail pieces and mounted them. I am waiting for the center tail piece to complete the install. I will be replacing the chain and the signals next and the front tire has already been replace with a Dunlop D220. I will show the steps in finishing when I am complete.
After
This is pretty much the completed project. You can check out the process in the How To section.
